My favourite art materials

When you’re also feeling creative, I’d love to share my favourite art materials with you! Often it’s handy to have a list at hand, so you don’t buy the same things twice. All materials I’m listing here, are the ones I’m using on a daily basis. Curious? Here we go!

Sketchbooks & paper

I’m very picky about paper. The paper needs to carry a lot of water, since I love using watercolours (or gouache).

When it comes to sketchbooks I’ve got a few brands I tested out already. Lately I’ve been using a Talens sketchbook which is definitely growing on me, since it holds water very well although it isn’t very thick paper (not the 300gr paper I’m normally using).

I bought a cold pressed sketch book from Etchr, and I think it isn’t my favourite, since the paper has a lot of texture. But that is of course, preference!

When it comes to paper when making artwork, I’ve been a big fan of the Arches Hot Pressed paper, with a fine texture - it’s heaven to work on. It’s 100% made of cotton, and you can definitely feel the difference with cellulose paper. I’ve tried the Baohong paper as well (also made of 100% cotton!), and they come in as second best to me! Also: Canson always has great paper when you’re afraid to buy the more expensive paper like Arches.

Pens

For lines, a quote, little details in a drawing or giving an illustration extra depth… I love using these pens:

Markers

Faber-Castell and Tom Bow Dual Tip brush markers are my current favourites when I’m brush lettering or when I’m adding colour to my illustrations. The Ecoline brush pens are also very lovely to work with. When it comes to drawing on windows, I always grab for chalk markers of Edding or the Posca acrylic markers.

Watercolours

My husband gifted me a wonderful set of Sennelier extra fine aquarel a couple of years ago, and it’s still one of my top picks when I’m working on an illustration.

Also got some tubes of the Winsor & Newton professional watercolour collection at my favourite online shop Splendith!

Brushes

I’ve got some from Talens, the Princeton Heritage, but lately I’ve been enjoying the Da Vinci paint brushes, since the synthetic hairs always go back to its original form. That is why the Kum Germany brushes are also very high on my wish list!
